Septic permits in Forsyth County
Who. Forsyth County Environmental Health, Land Use Section, issues on-site sewage management system permits and performs final inspections. Forsyth is in North Georgia Health District 2.
What needs a permit
- New system installation
- Replacement or major repair of a tank or drain field
- Any building, pool, addition or remodel on a septic-served lot — Environmental Health approval is required before Planning will issue a building permit
- Modifying or expanding a system
What doesn't. Preventive maintenance — pumping, filter cleaning, riser installation.
Timeline — plan for it. Forsyth Environmental Health states it may take twenty business days or more to process an application or review. In a county adding homes this fast, that's the realistic floor. If you're building, get the septic application in before anything else; if a system has failed, call the county the same day.
The process
- Application (email is accepted; credit payment by phone) with site plan and any required documents
- Site evaluation — sanitarian visits, digs test pits, classifies soil, sets the system type and size your lot can support
- Permit issued (valid 12 months); contractor installs
- Two inspections: pre-construction site verification and final inspection before backfill
Forsyth-specific
- The county will not accept septage pumped from outside Forsyth at its disposal sites, which is why haulers are county-specific here.
- Grease interceptors on private (septic) systems are regulated under Forsyth's sewer-use ordinance — restaurants and commercial kitchens on septic need to know this.
